THE COMPLETE SCORM E-LEARNING SOLUTION
SUMATRA SYSTEM 3 is a unique E-Learning solution in the current market.
The core of the system is a web based and completely SCORM 1.2 conformant Learning Management System (LMS/LCMS).
This permits to integrate any CBT/WBT which is compliant to the latest SCORM standard. All information is managed
in databases of the leading manufacturers (Oracle, IBM).
Besides the aforementioned, the system features a powerful software development environment (Sumatra IDE),
which is used to create portable Multimedia Applications and can be ordered optionally. For the development of
WBTs and Assessments an integrated package named WBTsuite is provided. In addition, a conversion systems
is offered which permits to translate CBTs made with traditional (proprietary) authoring tools to the open Internet
technology.
SUMATRA SYSTEM 3 also features several communication servers. These are fully and seamlessly integrated
into the system. Thus they can access and operate with the data of the LMS.
SUMATRA SYSTEM 3 is exclusively based on generally accepted and most up to date technology standards
of the Internet sector. The system is open, extensible and widely scalable. Several languages and designs (themes)
can be selected or customised. |

DISTRIBUTED APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT
The Integrated Development Environment (Sumatra IDE) is database orientated and team-based.
All project and media information is kept in databases. This information is always available in the latest version
for all persons involved in the development process through TCP/IP network connections. The integrated Project/Team
Server coordinates the work of the users.
Project changes are managed via FIFO queues (first in first out). The server automatically updates all project
views of all users working with the relevant project. Project nodes which are in use are locked and visually marked
for other users.
The communication among users of the system is carried out through the Development Chat. |

LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
The Learning Management System (LMS) is the core component of the E-Learning solution. The training offers
are made available through a web-based portal (Internet/Intranet). Thus the learning content can be made available
to anyone, anytime and anywhere.
The LMS manages and controls the launching of courses and training offers (CBT/WBT, documents etc.). It is also
responsible for the Management of Learners and all other basic and administrative data.
SUMATRA SYSTEM 3 offers a module for the definition of course structures and for the description of
dependencies between learning steps.
The learners can be assigned to groups (classes). Specific training offers and communication support (Newsgroups,
Chats) are associated to the group. Another aspect of the LMS - among others - is the development of tests/interactions
and the provision of several history functions. All information is managed by the LMS in a standardised way - and
not by the CBT/WBT. |

COMPLETE SCORM 1.2 SUPPORT
Since 1997 the U.S. department of defence (DoD) is running an initiative called ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning).
One main objective of this initiative is the integration of the work of several consortia, which have dealt with
E-Learning respectively IDL (Interactive Distance Learning), in order to define a generally accepted standard.
The result of this effort is called SCORM.
This stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. SCORM defines several categories which allow Learning
Management Systems to integrate compliant web-ready learning units (SCOs: Sharable Content Objects).
Content developers and developers of management systems can now both rely on standardised specifications. The current
release is SCORM 1.2. The main aspects it refers to are:
- Content Metadata (General, Lifecycle, Technical, Educational, etc.)
- Data model and call API for learning units (SCOs).
- Prerequisites and dependencies of learning units.
- Content Packaging.

THE PERFECT PLATFORM
SUMATRA SYSTEM 3 is the ideal platform for diverse requirements and customer profiles. The private
as well as the public sector can rely their E-Learning activities on the system. This is also true for Multimedia
and CBT/WBT developers.
The Web platform can be used with all standard operating systems, web servers, application servers and the leading
databases. Due to the so called 3-tier architecture a high degree of flexibility and scalability of the
implementation can be achieved. In a 3-tier architecture the client, the application and the database level are
separated.
The platform can by configured individually for each user (look/CI, language, options, etc.). Of course, it can
be customised to individual customer requirements. The applications on the client side are fully Web browser based.
Due to this thin client approach the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is reduced.
In addition to SCORM the learner and group data is modelled after the IMS Enterprise Information Model. |

E-Learning platform. |

MULTIMEDIA SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
The innovative Software Development Environment Sumatra IDE serves the development and deployment of CBT/WBT
and multimedia applications.
The IDE was completely developed with the Java programming language. Java supports a component model called
JavaBeans. Because of this, it is possible to extend the system at any time by new components (building
blocks). The programming is fully visual and component based. No programming language in the traditional sense
is needed or used.
Due to these software components and the ability to rely on centralised project and media information a high
degree of reusability is being achieved. This is further promoted by the consequent separation of design and
logic (behaviour). Therefore, it is possible to assign several learning paths to one design.
In addition the Sumatra IDE supports the development and management of multilingual applications and media. |

RUNTIME ENVIRONMENTS
Various application types can be developed with SUMATRA including the following:
- CBT (Computer Based Training)
- WBT (Web Based Training)
- Kiosks
- etc.
The applications are portable and can be executed under several
operating systems (Windows, Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X …) and standard browsers.
They are web-ready and SCORM conformant (through SCOs) from the beginning on. This way they fulfill the
security standards imposed by large corporations and organisations (so called Sandbox Applications). All multimedia
applications require for their execution only the royalty free Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Furthermore, many
distribution forms can be selected. This includes:
- SCORM LMS (i.e. SUMATRA SYSTEM 3)
- Web Server without SCORM
- CD-ROM
- Local installation
- Mixed (hybrid) forms.

SUMATRA MAKES TOOLBOOK CBTs WEB-READY
Existing CBTs usually do not offer (or only in a very limited way) web support. Very often functionalities are
missing or the installation requires so called proprietary "plug-ins" to be installed on each computer.
Especially in the environment of large corporations and organisations a wide coverage of proprietary technology
is not at all supportable.
SUMATRA SYSTEM 3 offers therefore a product extension called Sumatra/Bridge. This extension
allows the conversion of existing CBT to the Java/Sumatra platform.
Currently Sumatra/Bridge is available for Toolbook (one of the most widely used authoring tools),
a product from Click2Learn. The conversion process consists of:
- Export from Toolbook (XML)
- Import within the Sumatra IDE
- Automatic conversion of all pages of a book
- Automatic conversion from Toolbook´s OpenScript to XML.
|
 |

SUMATRA-Bridge saves time
and secures existing investments. |
